Personality
Playful, friendly nerd. Overconfident. Cocky. Strong underlying idea of I Can Handle It when she can probably not Handle It. Consequent impulsivity. Loyal and generous to her team and their students. Slight to moderate anti-authoritarian streak which has gotten her in trouble with people like Professor X. Very intelligent, a little too smart for her own good. Absolutely just horrendous fashion sense that she likes to call innovative. Disaster bi. Genuinely intelligent, logical, but that part of her brain can be overshadowed by bad emotions. Witty, carefree, but able to sober down for serious situations. Mostly. Somehow late for everything even though she ignores every door and wall in any building she's in, anyway. Unflinchingly honest; sometimes detrimental.
History
Kitty is 23 years old and came to the Institute at 15. She was born and raised in Deerfield, IL. Her parents, Terri and Carmen, were always loving and supportive to Kitty despite arguing a lot themselves. They always knew they had a genius daughter, and kept her mind sharp by allowing her to move forward more quickly in school and sign up for just a multitude of extra activities including dance, martial arts, and programming camps. Kitty had a fairly typical gifted and talented kid childhood; never popular at school exactly, but well-liked enough.
Kitty developed her powers at 14 years old but she stuck it out at home despite possibly being detected by Charles Xavier/asked to join the Institute earlier because her parents were going through a really hard time, and she felt she had to be there for them. It's not like her powers were affecting anyone else. She felt she could control them herself and didn't love the idea of being labeled a mutant.
Cue a full year of power related headaches and parent issues. After a disaster at Prom 2017, which saw Kitty fall directly into her date and then out of the school basement floor, she took Xavier's second offer. She moved to the Institute and her parents divorced. Kitty was a little hard to tame at the school, especially around a professor who acted like a father to everyone else. She bonded with her team, though, and through feeling like she was a worthwhile part of something bigger than her, she thrived.
Regarding team adventures, she had several points where she was in fact instrumental to team success. Or at least her older self was. Things kept lining up to show her she was in the right place.

Having graduated high school at the ripe old age of 15, Kitty could have gone to any ivy league, probably. She's not sure. She never tried. She stayed at the Institute and did her degree virtually. She's slowly picking away at a master's degree, but the team and kids come first.
And now she's not a teacher but does IT for the Institute and has a little office where she fixes everyone's tech, still on the team actively. She runs private lessons for those students particularly gifted in computers or hacking, and runs a chess club.
Powers
Intangibility/Phasing: Basically she can move through solid matter by passing through the atoms that make up that matter, rendering her intangible. This is a conscious power that she has to activate, and not a passive state of being.
She CAN: render people and objects intangible as well, but has to be touching physically. Her clothes will always phase with her, to specify things I should not have to. She can phase items up to about the size of a small car, provided she is touching them, and about three people at once. She can pass one of her body parts through a tangible object individually, like punching someone through a door and making only her fist tangible on the other end. She can damage such things as electrical items and people's nervous systems by phasing through and becoming tangible in the middle. Has to be a little bit careful about this lest she loses her full hand in someone's head or whatever, but she's getting better with practice. She can walk through air by tiptoeing between atoms.
Only once, she did pass through with the team to the Brimstone Dimension to rescue Kurt. That was only under extreme duress, and tired her out for a lot of days after.
She CANNOT CURRENTLY: Regularly pass through other dimensions or have her consciousness sit in one dimension/have her body in another. Still working on travelling great distance via airwalking.
WEAKNESSES INCLUDE: Passing through certain materials like adamantium makes her really sick; magic and energy attacks work on her in her intangible form and if she's damaged enough, she will stay in that form for quite a while, which is as you would imagine is wildly inconvenient.
Lockheed: Purple alien with a dragon appearance to whom she is bonded psychically. Best friend. Confidant. Perfect.
Other Skills: Dance, martial arts, multiple languages, genius IQ, computer hardware and other technology (human not alien at this point), Just too much.
Fun Facts: Kitty is Jewish and wears a little silver star of David to honor that.
Kitty has beat the Professor in chess about 60% of the time they play. This is not enough, even considering his telepath abilities.
Kitty used to have a hamster named Peter.
